Baby delivered by HGV driver at Gulf petrol station

HGV driver helps deliver baby

Ed Donohue, Certas Energy HGV driver, was delivering fuel to the service station when expecting Mother Amy and her partner Adam pulled onto the forecourt. After being stuck in traffic on the way to hospital, Adam pulled into the petrol station when he realised the baby was due any minute.

Ed said ‘I was midway through delivery when the driver flung open the passenger door, and I could see the birth was imminent. I had first aid training years ago when I was in the army, so it all just kicked in.’

With the help of his medical training from his time serving as an infantry solider, Ed helped Amy deliver her baby Solomon in front of the couples’ car – right in the middle of the forecourt.

‘I’m just happy to have helped’

Ed says ‘it was definitely the craziest thing I’ve seen on shift – and possibly that I’ve seen in my 50 years. I don’t feel like I did anything special – I’m just happy to have helped.’

Father Adam was grateful to Ed for all of his help: ‘Ed was brilliant – he was by our side throughout it all. He was a beacon of calm.’ Solomon was born at 8:46am, weighing 7lbs 14oz – just five minutes after arriving at the Gulf forecourt.

The community of local retail

Andre Salvidge, store manager at Gulf Wivelsfield Service Station, is proud of that the forecourt was a ‘safe haven for this family in their time of need. It was heart-warming to see everyone come together to help Amy and Adam.’

This moment captured everything we love about local retail here at Gulf – people at the heart of the community showing care and compassion when it matters most.

We’d like to send the whole family our best wishes and a special congratulations to Ed, for stepping in to help.
